Abstract

Human language usage in daily life serves as a crucial tool for expressing thoughts and emotions. To comprehend what other convey, humans employ both spoken and written communication, using tools like writing instruments. These forms of communication carry both explicit and implicit meanings. Spoken language conveys meaning through intonation, while written language requires more careful interpretation. For instance, literary works often contain layered meanings that vary depending on the reader's perception. In contrast, semantic studies focus on the inherent meanings of language. Semantics, a branch of linguistics, delves into the meanings of sentences, phrases, and clauses. Within semantics, the subfield of aspect and aspectuality examines how events unfold over time. This research focuses on identifying aspects and aspectuality in news articles published in The Jakarta Post, titled (1) Indonesian travel organizers tap into virtual tours amid pandemic (Sunday, 24 May 2020) written by Ni Nyoman Wira dan (2) Themed virtual tours to celebrate Indonesia’s 75th Independence Day (Friday, 14 August 2020) written by Ni Nyoman Wira. This research sets out to explore the use of aspect and aspectuality in news articles published by The Jakarta Post. It has a two-pronged approach: first, identifying the specific types of aspect and aspectuality present within these articles. Second, the research aims to pinpoint the linguistic markers that signal the presence of these temporal concepts. By examining how The Jakarta Post utilizes aspect and aspectuality, the study seeks to contribute to a broader understanding of how these linguistic tools function in real-world journalistic writing. This exploration has potential implications for various fields, including linguistics, discourse analysis, and journalism studies. Ultimately, the research aims to shed light on how language shapes the way temporal information is presented and interpreted within news reports. This study of aspect and aspectuality resulting markers that indicate how events unfold over time, in The Jakarta Post revealed they aren't always present in every paragraph. This suggests journalists use these markers strategically, depending on whether the paragraph describes ongoing events or static information.
