Abstract

In this research, the researcher explores the crime genre formula and the portrayal of the anti-hero in Scarface (1983) film by Brian de Palma. The researcher used the John G. Cawelti theory of crime genre formula: poverty, achieve money and power, overreaching, destruction, and city as the background setting, then the dark triad theory for the portrayal of the anti-hero, which is narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy. The aim of this research is to find out the construction of the crime formula in Scarface film and analyze the anti-hero character represented by Tony as the main character in Scarface film. The research method used in this study is the descriptive-qualitative method. The researcher used this method to analyze the data to understand the problems that occur in literary works because a descriptive explanation is needed to explain what crime genre and anti-hero are, how crime genre formulas are constructed, and how the portrayal of the anti-hero is represented. The result of this research is that Scarface film has a connection to the crime genre formula that is represented through the form of narrative structure, such as plot and dialogue. Then, Tony, as the main character, is an anti-hero because he has the three personalities of the dark triad, which portrays him as an anti-hero through his actions in the film.
