Abstract

In this thesis, entitled the Comparison of Illocutionary Act in Obama’s and Jokowi's Presidential Election Victory Speeches, the researcher aims to find the types, functions, similarities, and differences in the both of speech.The research uses the theory of Searle (1979) and Leech (1983) to analyze the types of illocutionary act and the theory from Leech (1983) to analyze the functions of illocutionary.The research uses descriptive qualitative method. The researcher takes Obama’s presidential election victory speech from the website of CNN Political Ticker and Jokowi’s Presidential Election Victory Speech form the website of Tribun News. The research found five types of illocutionary act from thirty data in Obama’s presidential election victory speech and fifteen data from Jokowi’s presidential election victory speech. There are assertive, expressive, commissive, directive and declarative. Then, it found two illocutionary functions in the both of speech as convivial and collaborative. Nine data found in Obama and four data are found in Jokowi. Besides,it is found three similarities in the both of speeches. There are the both of speeches containing five types of illocutionary act, have the same functions of illocutionary, and have the same expression of grateful. On the other hand, they have two differences found in the both of speeches. There are have the difference in expressing of thanking and greeting.
