Abstract
Because speech is the most effective way to communicate, speaking becomes one of the most crucial skill to develop. Speaking involves building a relationship between listener and speaker. Thus, people have to comprehend what they are saying as they are speaking English as a foreign language. However there are some obstacles faced by students in speaking class. Due to these issues in speaking, the study aims (1) to figure out the difficulties do EFL students face in doing speaking activities, and (2) to find out the way EFL students overcome their problems in doing speaking activities. This study utilized case study qualitative approach and conducted with 32 students and 3 of them were interviewed. The participants were the 2nd gade students of MA Persis 03 Pameungpeuk. The results of the study is there are nine problems that students usually found in speaking activities. The problems are related to the aspect of anxiety, grammar, pronunciation, motivation, environment, confidence, and so on. Hence, there are some ways students could do to overcome these barriers such as having discussions with their fellow classmates, learning English through songs, and doing more exercises in grammar.
