Abstract

INDONESIA: Perkembangan zaman yang semakin canggih menyebabkan penggunaan Instagram tak bisa dipisahkan dalam kehidupan sehari-hari, salah satunya di kalangan mahasiswa/i di kota Bandung. Kebebasan akses tersebut mempermudah mahasiswa/i untuk memperoleh informasi dan berkomunikasi, yang mana hal tersebut menimbulkan adanya perilaku social comparison. Tujuan dari penelitian ini ialah untuk mengetahui apakah self-esteem dan self acceptance berperan sebagai prediktor terhadap perilaku social comparison mahasiswa pengguna aktif Instagram. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif dengan rancangan penelitian kausalitas. Subjek pada penelitian ini ialah mahasiswa/i yang berkuliah di Universitas yang ada di Bandung, berusia 18-25 tahun, dan merupakan pengguna aktif Instagram dengan penggunaan minimal 30 menit dalam satu hari, serta total jumlah subjeknya ialah 353 responden. Penelitian ini menggunakan teknik non probability sampling yaitu insidental sampling. Pengambilan data menggunakan skala State Self-esteem Scale dari teori Heatherton & Polivy, Berger’s Self Acceptance Scale dari teori Berger, dan Iowa-Netherlands Comparison Orientation Scale (INCOM) dari teori Festinger lalu kemudian disusun oleh Gibbons & Buunk. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa self-esteem dan self acceptance berperan sebagai prediktor terhadap perilaku social comparison, baik itu secara minor maupun mayor. Artinya, self-esteem dan self acceptance yang dimiliki oleh mahasiswa/i pengguna aktif Instagram mampu mengakibatkan adanya perilaku social comparison. ENGLISH: The development of increasingly sophisticated times means that the use of Instagram cannot be separated from everyday life, one of which is among students in the city of Bandung. This freedom of access makes it easier for students to obtain information and communicate, which gives rise to social comparison behavior. The aim of this research is to find out whether self-esteem and self-acceptance act as predictors of the social comparison behavior of students who are active Instagram users. This research uses quantitative methods with causality research design. The subjects in this research were students studying at universities in Bandung, aged 18-25 years, and were active Instagram users with a minimum of 30 minutes of use a day, and the total number of subjects was 353 respondents. This research uses a non-probability sampling technique, namely incidental sampling. Data were collected using the State Self-esteem Scale from Heatherton & Polivy's theory, Berger's Self Acceptance Scale from Berger's theory, and the Iowa-Netherlands Comparison Orientation Scale (INCOM) from Festinger's theory and then compiled by Gibbons & Buunk. The results of this research show that self-esteem and self-acceptance act as predictors of social comparison behavior, both minor and major. This means that the self-esteem and self-acceptance possessed by students who are active Instagram users can result in social comparison behavior.
