Abstract

This research aims to identify the types of flouting maxims used by the affirmative and the opposing team in the “Anti & Pro-Feminist Debate on Abortion, Trans Rights, And #Me Too" on the Vice YouTube Channel in 2022, employing H.P. Grice's cooperative principle theory. The principles consist of conversational maxims, namely the maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relation, and maxim of manner. This research utilizes the qualitative descriptive study method, relying on text data and employing steps in the data analysis, drawing on diverse designs. The results of this research serve the representation of flouting maxims and the main reasons behind each flouting maxim used by the affirmative and opposing teams in the "Anti & Pro-Feminist Debate on Abortion, Trans Rights, And #Me Too" on the Vice YouTube Channel in 2022. The flouting maxims are presented in the form of utterances. There are 73 instances of flouting maxims identified in the debate video, with 21 instances in the maxim of quality, 5 in the maxim of quantity, 15 in the maxim of relation, and 32 considered as flouting maxims of manner. The quality understanding about the phenomena of flouting maxim in this object can be highlights the flouting maxim in this debate has such a pattern which underscores the complex interplay between communication strategies, flouting maxims, and the depth of understanding achieved in discussing sensitive and multifaceted topics such as feminism and intersectionality. In the detail context of an anti and pro-feminist debate on abortion, trans rights, and #MeToo, participants may employ various strategies that involve flouting conversational maxims to advance their arguments. The pro-feminist used extensive statistics on abortion rights to overwhelm their opponent and emphasize the importance of the issue, thereby indirectly flouting the Quantity maxim by providing more information than necessary. On the other hand, an anti-feminist might use hyperbole, such as claiming that all pro-choice advocates support late-term abortions, which flouts the Quality maxim to provoke an emotional reaction. Additionally, a participant might respond to a question about trans rights by shifting the topic to bathroom safety, flouting the Relation maxim to redirect the debate to a more favorable ground. Finally, the use of jargon or complex language can flout the Manner maxim, making it harder for the opponent to counter the argument effectively. These tactics illustrate how flouting maxims can be strategically employed in debates to influence the direction and impact of the discussion of feminist discourse.
