Abstract
This research investigates the type and function of code mixing on the X account @collegemenfess, a popular platform among students for sharing university-related topics. The study employs Muysken (2000) theory to classify the types of code mixing and Hoffmann (1991) theory to explore its functions. Using a qualitative method, this research analyzes tweets submitted to @collegemenfess to identify the prevalence and nature of code mixing within this context. The findings reveal a significant number of tweets containing insertion types of code mixing. The dominant function of these code-mixed tweets is to talk about particular topics. This prevalence is attributed to the efficiency of code mixing in making tweets shorter and clearer, as certain academic terms are more commonly and precisely conveyed in English. This functional aspect highlights how code mixing enhances communication by providing clarity and brevity in the dissemination of information. The insights from this research contribute to the understanding of code mixing as a linguistic phenomenon in social media, reflecting its practical usage in contemporary communication among university students. By examining the types and functions of code mixing on @collegemenfess, this study sheds light on the linguistic strategies employed by students to navigate and articulate their academic and social experiences. This research underscores the evolving nature of language use in digital platforms and offers a comprehensive view of how code mixing serves as a tool for effective communication in the present day.
