Abstract

This research examines the use of Cooperative and Non-Cooperative Principles between the speaker and the interlocutor in a podcast, specifically focusing on the Zach Sang Show Podcast: Episode Lay Zhang. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method to analyze utterances containing Cooperative and Non- Cooperative Principles derived from the podcast as data. The analysis is based on Grice's (1975) theory concerning the types and applications of Cooperative and Non-Cooperative Principles. The research includes 82 data, with 28 data categorized under Cooperative Principles, specifically: 10 Maxim of Quantity, 7 Maxim of Quality, 8 Maxim of Relation, and 3 Maxim of Manner. On the other hand, 54 data fall under Non-Cooperative Principles, comprising: 1 instance each of Violating, Infringing, and Opting Out, 2 Suspending, 21 Flouting the Maxim of Quantity, and 5 Flouting the Maxim of Quality. Flouting the Maxim of Quantity is the most common observation because Lay Zhang frequently provides excessive information to capture attention and enhance appeal, a strategy often used by public figures. In contrast, Violating, Infringing, and Opting Out are rare since public figures are expected to follow social norms and communication ethics. Actions like violating or infringing are seen as unethical or impolite, so individuals generally avoid them to protect their reputation and maintain relationships.
