Abstract

This study analyzed the representation of social isolation in two short stories, namely "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner and "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. These two short stories were chosen because even though they were written in different periods and contexts, they have a similar theme, namely the representation of social isolation. Social isolation is defined as an objective state in which a person loses contact and social interaction. Social isolation is typically used to describe the social or psychological state of a person who feels isolated from the social environment around them. Isolation can be caused by various factors such as internal conflicts, social differences, family rules, or even political situations. This study aims to analyze the representation of social isolation through themes and characterization in the two short stories. The method used is qualitative analysis with an intrinsic approach, namely by examining intrinsic elements with theme and character limitations. In addition, this study uses a comparative literary approach with the theory of Susan Bassnett (1993) to explore the themes and characterizations that appear in the two short stories. The theme of social isolation is depicted through the conditions of being confined and isolated from the social environment experienced by the main character. This research is expected to provide a comprehensive understanding of the issue of social isolation depicted in literary works and its implications for the condition of the main characters, but the characters who are authoritarian in the two stories play a very important role in the social isolation experienced by the main characters. Penelitian ini menganalisis representasi isolasi sosial dalam dua cerita pendek, yaitu "A Rose for Emily" karya William Faulkner dan "The Yellow Wallpaper" karya Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Kedua cerita pendek ini dipilih karena meskipun ditulis pada periode dan konteks yang berbeda, namun memiliki tema yang serupa, yaitu representasi isolasi sosial. Isolasi sosial didefinisikan sebagai keadaan objektif di mana seseorang kehilangan kontak dan interaksi sosial. Isolasi sosial biasanya digunakan untuk menggambarkan keadaan sosial atau psikologis seseorang yang merasa terasingkan dari lingkungan sosial di sekitarnya. Isolasi dapat disebabkan oleh berbagai faktor seperti konflik internal, perbedaan sosial, aturan keluarga, atau bahkan situasi politik. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis representasi isolasi sosial melalui tema dan penokohan dalam kedua cerita pendek tersebut. Metode yang digunakan adalah analisis kualitatif dengan pendekatan intrinsik, yakni dengan mengkaji elemen-elemen intrinsik dengan Batasan tema dan karakter. Selain itu, penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan sastra perbandingan dengan teori Susan Bassnett (1993) untuk mengeksplorasi tema dan karakterisasi yang muncul dalam kedua cerpen tersebut. Tema isolasi sosial digambarkan melalui kondisi terkurung dan terisolasi dari lingkungan sosial yang dialami oleh tokoh utama. Penelitian ini diharapkan dapat memberikan pemahaman yang komprehensif tentang isu isolasi sosial yang digambarkan dalam karya sastra dan implikasinya terhadap kondisi tokoh-tokoh utama, namun tokoh yang menjadi otoriter dalam kedua cerita tersebut sangat berperan terhadap isolasi sosial yang dialami karakter utamanya.
