Abstract

This research Is based on the phenomenon rises up at Darussalam Islamic Boarding School There is imbalance between the high students'response toward weekly English speech program with their speaking ability It can be known from some students who still cannot communicate using English well and get low score at the test Speaking is concerned to be developed as basic skill for easier science transfer in teaching learning process and as preparation for them to face real Iife communication There fore, Darussalam Islamic Boarding School is implementing English speech program as extra-curricular program, which is managed by students organization (OPPD), helped and supervised by teachers. The purpose of this research is to know the reality of students response to weekly English speech program, the reality of their speaking abilitiy, and the reality of the influence of students response to weekly English speech program to their speaking abilitiy The significance of this study Is to provide the information, which can be used as basic educational information for the next teaching English language process, especially to students speaking ability The method used in this study Is descriptive method by quantitative approach Data was taken from the grade two high school of students at Darussalam Islamic Boarding School The techniques used In this study are by using observation, interview, questionnaire and test. Based on questionnaire and test, the result of the study indicated that students response on English speech program is positive (75 6) Their speaking is In good qualification (77 2) The correlation between those two variables is 0 103 that Ires lies interval 0 00-020 of standard scale that indicates very low correlation. There fore, the writer can interpret there is significant correlation between the weekly English speech program toward students speaking ability The degree of it is 11% It means that the students response to weekly English speech program is positive and Influences 11% toward their speaking ability On the other hand, 89% of students speaking ablity is influenced by other factors.
