Abstract

The Unveiling Twist of Agatha Christie’s Short Stories: Element of Suspense and Element of Surprise in The Call of Wings (2013) and The Witness for Prosecution (2011). Undergraduate Thesis, English Literature Department, Faculty Adab and Humanities, State Islamic University of Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung, Pembimbing: 1. Deuis Sugaryamah, M.Pd., 2. Hasbi Assiddiqi, S.S., M.A. This study aims to identify the element of suspense and the element of surprise also the correlation between those elements in revealing plot twist. To identify the element of suspense Saricks’ theory is used, while to identify and categorize element of of surprise Iwata’s framework is used, ultimaltely the correlation between element of suspense and element of surprise are analyzed by Chatman’s and Tomlinson’s theory. Through the qualitative method, data was collected using a narrative approach with data collection techniques by reviewing documents relevant to this research and using inductive data analysis techniques. The results show that the short stories The Call of Wings and The Witness for Prosecution have elements of suspense in fast pacing, tone/mood that is isolated and gripping, style/language that uses terms that support suspense, characterization as a professional detective as an amateur detective, frame/setting that mostly occurs at night or tense daytime, and story line that makes the tension increase from the beginning to the end of the story. The results of the identification of the element of surprise in The Call of Wings and The Witness for Prosecution contain element of surprise which is divided into relieving-surprise and shocking-surprise. The results of revealing the plot twist in The Call of Wings and The Witness for Prosecution show a correlation between the element of surprise and the element of suspense that creates the plot twist, besides that the red herring between the two short stories also strengthens the plot twist.
