Abstract

Siti Dilla Alawiyah. 1215030233. The Efferent and Aesthetic Understanding of The Reader Based on Literature and Non-Literature Major Toward Figurative Language in Emily Dickinson’s Poem. An Undergraduate Thesis, English Literature Research Programme, Faculty of Adab and Humanities, State Islamic University of Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. Advisors: 1. Dian Nurrachman, S.S., M.Pd., 2. Erfan M. Fauzi, M. Pd. This research aims to determine the type of reader understanding between readers with a literature and non-literature major, towards the figurative language contained in five selected poems by Emily Dickinson. Among them are entitled The Sun just Touched the Morning, The Mountain Sat upon the Plain, The Frost of Death was on the Pane, The Day Came Slow until Five, and Hope is a Subtle Glutton. In Emily Dickinson's poems, there are several figurative languages that often trigger various understanding among readers. The analysis in this research included the type of reader understanding of the figurative language contained in the poems. The theory used in this research is Rosenblatt's theory, namely transactional reader response, which categorizes readers into two types, efferent and aesthetic types. In this research, data collected through a questionnaire that had been distributed to ten students from a literature major, and ten other respondents from students with a non-literature major. This aims to see whether the background influences readers in understanding a figurative language in poem. The results of this research indicate that readers from literature and non-literature major can be classified into both efferent and aesthetic reader types. Therefore, literature and non-literature major are not a benchmark for being classified into a particular type of reader.
