Abstract
Teachers’ strategies are crucial for creating engaging and active learning environments that capture students' interest. The passivity amongst students by saying that whether “language learners are passive or active in class depends more on their teachers’ expectations than on culturally-based learning styles.” The passive students do not attend lectures regularly when they do, they are usually late or not involved in class activities. The research aimed to identify teacher strategies and the challenges in managing passive learners in EFL classrooms. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study method. Collecting data, this study conducted classroom observations of an EFL class, focusing on the teacher's strategies and the passive learners. The findings of the research showed that EFL teachers highlight various strategies employed by teacher to engage and manage passive students in EFL classrooms. Establishing classroom rules collaboratively fosters student ownership and commitment, while effective communication and strong teacher-student relationships create a supportive learning environment. Teachers utilize diverse methods, such as games and media, to motivate students and enhance engagement. Collaborative strategies, including random sampling and the think-pair-share (TPS) approach, promote peer interaction and improve learning outcomes. Additionally, the drilling method and rotating seating arrangements are effective techniques for encouraging active participation among students. The teacher also faced challenges in teaching and managing passive students are significantly influenced by students' vocabulary mastery as well as their motivation and confidence levels.
