Abstract

Thanking is one of the speech acts or communicative acts frequently and abundantly utilized in human interactions. People give thanks in an assortment of occasions and situations in his/her daily life interactions with others. This phenomenon is depicted in Margaret (2011) movie script. Thereby, there are some questions in this research, they are: 1) What thanking strategies are elaborated by the characters in Margaret (2011) movie script? 2) How are the expressions of thanking show their function? The researcher uses Aijmer’s theory about types of thanking strategies. Moreover, to support the findings, the researcher uses Hymes’s theory about the domain function of thanking finds in Margaret (2011) movie. The method used in this research is qualitative method. This method used by identifying the types of thanking strategies and describe the function of thanking strategies. The data of this research are taken from Margaret (2011) movie script. The researcher found 76 thanking expression, they are: Thanking somebody explicitly (56 expressions), expressing appreciation of the addressee (3 expressions), expressing appreciation of the act (6 expressions), expressing emotion (3 expressions), and combination of two or three types of thanking strategies (8 expressions). The researcher also found nine functions why the characters used thanking strategies in the movie, they are: Acknowledging a major favour (27 expressions), acknowledging a favour (21 expressions), dismissing a person or a person's services (6 expressions), accepting a proposal that the conversation should end (1 expression), closing conversation (2 expressions), accepting an offer (1 expression), making the hearer feel good (12 expressions), irony sarcasm brusqueness (5 expressions), negative request (1 expression).
