Abstract
This study aims to identify the types of irony found in the novel The Weight of Our Sky and analyze how irony functions in the narrative. The theory underlying this study is M.H. Abrams' (1999) theory of irony, which identifies nine types of irony: verbal, structural, stable, unstable, dramatic, tragic, cosmic, and romantic irony. Using a qualitative method and structuralist approach, this study examines the intrinsic elements of the text, with a particular focus on the use of irony as a key literary device. The analysis results reveal four types of irony in this novel: verbal irony, dramatic irony, tragic irony, and cosmic irony, with dramatic irony being the most prevalent. Irony plays a crucial role in this novel, contributing significantly to the development of the theme, characterization, and plot. Irony reinforces issues of psychological trauma, social conflict, and stigma surrounding mental health. Additionally, irony creates tension and surprise in the story, while also offering social criticism of ethnic violence. Thus, irony in The Weight of Our Sky not only enriches the language style but also reinforces the moral and emotional messages conveyed. This study contributes to literary research, particularly in the study of narrative devices in contemporary Southeast Asian fiction.
