Abstract

This study analyses the application of the hard-boiled detective formula in Holly Jackson’s A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder and examines how its elements build narrative tension throughout the story. The hard-boiled detective genre is characterised by tough, cynical detectives who frequently act outside the law to administer justice in corrupt and violent environments. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method with content analysis based on John G. Cawelti’s formula theory. Data are drawn from the narrative text of the novel and analysed to identify aspects such as detective characterisation, the investigative process, utilisation of clues, and conflict resolution. The findings reveal that Pip Fitz-Amobi, embodies the traits of a hard-boiled detective by facing moral dilemmas, physical threats and complex social conflicts while investigating an unsolved murder. The narrative builds tension through a dynamic investigation, the gradual revelation of hidden truths and confrontations with those attempting to obstruct Pip’s inquiry. The study concludes that A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder successfully adapts the hard-boiled detective formula for a modern teenage audience, creating an engaging and thought-provoking story. This research is expected to contribute to the study of popular literature, particularly detective fiction, and to serve as a reference for readers, writers and academics interested in contemporary narrative analysis.
