Abstract

This study aims to investigate the humor techniques mentioned by Berger as well as investigate the humor in the formulaic aspects mentioned by Saricks in the film Thor: Love & Thunder directed by Taika Waititi. This film is a fantasy category film but presents a lot of humor with various techniques. Therefore, the researcher asked two questions: 1.) What are the humor techniques used in the movie Thor: Love & Thunder? 2.) How are the humor techniques are presented in the aspect of fantasy formula in the movie Thor: Love & Thunder. To achieve the answers to these questions, the researcher categorized the humor techniques in the film by using the categorization of humor techniques by Berger (1993). Then to analyze how the humor in the fantasy formula by analyzing it, using aspects of the Fantasy genre by Saricks (2019) that have been investigated to draw conclusions from the analysis. This research method uses qualitative research methods. Scenes and dialogues are used as data which are cited in a table. The conclusion of the analysis of the movie Thor: Love & Thunder (2022) is that in building a film, aspects of genre formulation can be combined by using humor through techniques that are relevant to each other. And although this movie is a humorous fantasy, it does not trivialize the story. From this paper, there are 54 data on the use of humor, and re-analyzed through aspects of the fantasy formula. There are 35 Language humor techniques that are directly related to the Style/Language aspect of the fantasy formula, 11 Logic humor techniques that are closely related to the Frame/Setting aspect, 9 Identity humor techniques that are directly related to the Characterization aspect, and 7 Action humor techniques that are closely related to the Pacing aspect.
