Abstract

In other words, this study focuses on analyzing interpersonal meaning in utterance, which helps reveal the speaker's attitudes and judgments toward what is being communicated. There are three mood types used in Anies Baswedan's utterances based on Halliday's theory: Declarative, Imperative, and Interrogative. The modality used in Anies Baswedan's expressions is categorized into three levels: low, median, and high. By analyzing the mood and modality systems in depth, this study is able to interpret the interpersonal meaning in Anies Baswedan's utterances. However, this research only focuses on the topic The Fault In Our Education. From the responses of Anies Baswedan towards the question by the hosts related to the topic of education in Indonesia. The results of this study consist of 11 utterances which have been analyzed into 117 clauses of data in Anies Baswedan's utterances. The data was classified based on the mood system, consisting of 110 declarative moods, 3 imperative moods, and 4 interrogative moods. The analysis shows that Anies Baswedan uses declarative mood more frequently in his speeches to convey information to the audience. Anies Baswedan often uses storytelling as a way to express his ideas. He frequently talks about reading books and demonstrates a deep understanding of education with humble and polite tone. The content focuses on educational issues, particularly related to the willingness to read. Additionally, the results of modality are 7 including 1 low modality, 2 median modalities and 4 high modalities. The most frequently used modality was the high level which used to encourage the audience to fully understand the issue of declining reading interest in Indonesia. Additionally, He also uses this way of speaking to encourage the audience to feel motivated and take action to improve their interest and skills in reading.
