Abstract

The study of the speech act of requesting recently shows that new approaches are required to analyze the use of requesting speech acts by analyzing the types of requests and request strategies including the condition of requests related to the context. This research focuses on analyzing the types of requests and request strategy using the theory of request by Searle, Brown and Levinson and also Blum-Kulka. This research applies descriptive qualitative method. This study aims at describing the types of request, describing condition of requests and describing its relation to request strategies which are found in the dialog of a movie. The data are the dialogs from the movie entitled “Liar Liar”. The way to collect data is using docummentation method. The method involved an analysis of types of request, condition of requests and request strategies found in the movie. The result showed that there are three types of request employed in the dialog of the movie: on record without redress (direct requests) 40% of the data, on record without redress (conventionally indirect requests) 45% of the data and off record 15% of the data. There are nine request strategies employed in the dialog of Liar Liar movie: mood derivable, performatives, hedged performatives, obligation statements, want statements, suggestory formulae, query-preparatory, strong hints, and mild hints. The dominant type of request strategies which frequently used is on record with redress (conventionally indirect requests). It is because the conventionally indirect request seems to be more appropriate and polite to the hearer. Kajian mengenai tindak tutur permintaan baru-baru ini menunjukan bahwa pendekatan baru adalah diperlukan untuk menelaah penggunaan dari tindak tutur permintaan dengan menganalisis tipe-tipe dari permintaan dan strategi-strategi permintaan termasuk kondisi dari permintaan terkait pada konteksnya. Penelitian ini fokus menganalisa tipe-tipe permintaan dan strategi permintaan menggunakan teori permintaan oleh Searle, Brown dan Levinson serta Blum-Kulka. Penelitian ini menerapkan metode kualitatif deskriptif. Penelitian ini bertujuan menjelaskan tipe-tipe permintaan, kondisi-kondisi dari permintaan dan hubungannya dengan strategi permintaan yang ditemukan dalam dialog dari sebuah film. Data-datanya adalah dialog-dialog dari film yang berjudul “Liar Liar”. Cara mengumpulkan datanya adalah menggunakan metode dokumentasi. Metode ini melibatkan analisis dari tipe-tipe permintaan, kondisi dari permintaan dan strategi permintaan yang ditemukan dalam film. Hasilnya menunjukan bahwa ada tiga tipe permintaan yang digunakan dalam dialog dari film, antara lain on record without redress (permintaan langsung) 30% data, on record without redress (permintaan tidak langsung secara konvensional) 35% data dan off record 15% data. Ada pun sembilan strategi permintaan yang digunakan dalam dialog-dialog dari film Liar Liar: mood derivable, performatif, performatif mengikat, pernyataan kemestian, pernyataan kemauan, formula saran, pernyataan-persiapan, petunjuk kuat, and petunjuk ringan. Tipe strategi permintaan yang dominan sering digunakan adalah on record with redress (permintaan tidak langsung konvensional). Hal tersebut dikarenakan permintaan tidak langsung konvensional nampaknya lebih sesuai dan lebih sopan kepada pendengar.
