Abstract
Interpretation is a tool for communication that helps in coordinating verbal and sign language as the communication takes place. The interpretation of the language should be completely understood from the context. Therefore, an interpreter must acquire two language skills at least. Not everyone can interpret one language into another language well, especially English to Indonesian, and it needs some special skills, trainings, and media in interpreting. Therefore, this study focused on the use of speech video transcription to improve students’ simultaneous interpreting skill. The research was aimed (1) to find out the students’ abilities in performing simultaneous interpreting before using video transcription, (2) to find out the students’ ability in performing simultaneous interpreting after using video transcription, and (3) to find out the significant differences of students’ ability in performing simultaneous interpreting before and after using video transcription. The research used a quantitative method with experimental design involving pre-test, treatments, and post-test as the data collection technique. This research was conducted on 35 sixth semester students of English Education Department of UIN Bandung. The result showed that students’ writing ability by using students’ reflection is good seen from the mean score after the students were given treatments that was 71.60. Furthermore, the improvement of students’ writing ability was medium seen from the gain score that was 0.5. The result of t-test showed that ttable was on significance 5% was 1.19, while tcount was 4.45 meaning that tcount > ttable, so that H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. Based on the results, this research concluded that there was a significant difference on students’ simultaneous interpreting ability after using video transcription. The use of video transcription was more effective to improve their interpreting ability particularly in performing simultaneous interpreting. Therefore, video transcription can be applied to students in order to improve their simultaneous interpreting ability.
