Abstract

In communication, there is often a misunderstanding between the speaker and the addressee. People often communicating by using deictic expressions. By understanding deictic, we will more easily understand what is meant by someone. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the types of deixis and the kinds of deixis usage in The Ellen DeGeneres Show because it is one of the events which there is communication between humans and certainly has lots of meaning. This study uses Renkema and Levinson's theory to analyze the types of deixis and kinds of deictic usage. Renkema states that deixis has three types, there are person deixis, time deixis, and place deixis. Besides that, Levinson argues that there are two kinds of deictic usage, namely gestural and symbolic. This study applies qualitative method by using descriptive analysis as technique of data analysis. The writer analyzes the utterances as the data which take from five videos in The Ellen DeGeneres Show that have the most viewers and it takes from The Ellen Show Youtube Channel that posted in November 2018. The result of this research shows that the writer finds 210 data in total, even there are many types of deixis in one utterance. There are 202 data in person deixis, 10 data in time deixis, 13 data in place deixis, 16 data in gestural, and 9 data in symbolic. The conclusion of this research is deixis involves many aspects of other linguistic studies such as pronouns, tenses, prepositions, adverbs, and many more. the uses of deixis in every language practice, especially in the conversation like in the talk show are surely important. This fact is considerable since there is deixis in every single sentence of the utterance.
