Abstract
This study aims to compare the anxiety experienced by the two main characters in the Black Swan (2010) movie directed by Darren Aronofsky and Whiplash (2014) movie directed by Damien Chazelle through comparative literature from Susan Bassnett and Sapardi Djoko Damono as a method to find similarities and differences between both movies and Psychoanalysis by Sigmund Freud as the theory which refers to Albertine Minderop’s book, Psikologi Sastra to understand more about the topic of discussion. This researcher divides the research problem into two parts; 1) What kinds of anxiety experienced by Nina Sayers and Andrew Neiman in Black Swan and Whiplash movies? And 2) What are the factors of anxiety experienced by Nina Sayers and Andrew Neiman? This study also uses a qualitative approach to get a subjective assessment through source of data, data collection techniques, data analysis techniques, time and place. The result of the analysis gives the conclusion that Nina Sayers and Andrew Neiman suffers three types of anxiety: neurotic anxiety, moral anxiety, and realistic anxiety. These three kinds of anxiety are influenced by several factors namely; id, ego, superego, and the external world. The similarities of the two movies are in the storyline, obsessed performers, and causes of anxiety expressed. Meanwhile, the differences between the two movies are in the characters, facing their anxiety and the end of the story.
