Abstract

A story can not be seperated from a formula. Formula is a structure of how the story told or the structure of narrative conventions that applied in a great number of individual works. The concept of formula is a means of generalizing the characteristics of large group of individual works from certin combinations of cultural materials and achetypal story patterns. One of the most favorite formula in fiction is Cinderella formula. It tells story between a poor girl and a rich man. Nevertheless, not all Cinderella formula story served a story with a poor girl who falls in love with a rich man. When the researcher read The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks, the one who poor is a man. Therefore, the researcher intend to analyze the structure of Cinderella formula in two novels that has the main characters with different social background, The Notebook and Pride and Prejudice. This research aimed to find out the construction of Cinderella formula by analyzing the characters’ social background, conflict, and narrative structure in both novels. Not only analyze the construction of it but also compare it by using comparative literature theory. This research is designed as a literary criticism. The method used in this research is comparative literature method. The researcher also uses qualitative research method and descriptive analysis method. The results of the research indicate that the character’s social background and conflict construct Cinderella formula in both novels. Eventhough there is a different social background between the hero and the heroine in both novels, however it still construct Cinderella formula in the story. The difference is the Cinderella formula term for The Notebook called Male Cinderella formula, meanwhile in Pride and Prejudice called Cinderella formula. However both novels used Cinderella formula in its story, nevertheless some differences can be found between each of the novels. There are some parts of the narrative structure that did not found in each novel. From the research it can be conclude that the characters’ social background and conflict construct Cinderella formula in The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks and in Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. The narrative structure in both novels also show some similarities and differences.
