Abstract

Language is very important and can not be separated from human life because it is a tool of communication. The communication will be understood clearly when the the addressee obtain to understand about what the speaker means. In pragmatics study, the use of addressee forms includes to social deixis. The purpose of this research are to find out the types and the functions of social deixis in The King movie script. This researcher uses Levinson's theory. The source of data taken from movie script. This research uses qualitative research. This research used design of descriptive method because the analysis data presented descriptively. Descriptive qualitative is a feasible and acceptable label for qualitative research designs. As the results, there are 40 data of social deixis expressions found in the utterances of the characters in The King. This research shows two social deixis expressions, they are 25 data of relational and 15 data of absolute. There are three types of relational form that found in The King movie script, 10 data as referent honorific, 13 data as addressee honorific, 2 data as bystander honorific, and does not found a data as formality level. There are two types of absolute form that found in The King movie script, 3 data as authorized speaker and 12 data as authorized recipient. From 40 data of social deixis expressions, the functions of social deixis was found 8 data as to clarify closeness, 10 data as a social status differentiation, 7 data as politeness, and 3 data as social identity.
