Abstract

Lyric is one of the literary works that tell stories about human life and its intricacies through short writing. The object of study is song lyric by Linkin Park. Linkin Park is one of the great American group bands from Aguora Hills, California that has genre Nu Metal or Rap Metal Linkin Park is one of band favourite by the researcher. The researcher uses the philosophy of semiotics to interpret the symbols found in the song lyrics by Linkin Park. Representation may, in simple terms, be described as a representation of an individual or phenomenon constructed by language. Pain is one of very bad situation, the researcher is interested in stating a representation of pain in order to show Linkin Park fans a lot of the meaning of pain, so in this research the researcher will focused to analyse about the representation of pain in song lyric by Linkin Park. These signs can be a symbol. Where this symbol is shown by the sign. To analyse sign, symbol and meaning, the researcher will using semiotic theory to finding that all in song lyric by Linkin park. The theories underlying and supporting research, including the theories of semiotics, the triadic relationship phase theory of Pierce, and some research-related theories. The researcher analyze 13 object from song lyrics by Linkin Park using triadic relation process for finding the symbol of pain. The written text as symbol which have been seen or hear on song is the symbol and also the representamen. Then, the triadic relation process is continued to the next step; determining object. The last is interpretant, it is the researcher’s exegesis of the combination of the representamen and object. So, the triadic relation process which occurs on selected symbol happened in three steps: representamen, object, and interpretant. And these steps are described by Peirce’s triadic relation process. The researcher finds some conclusions which have been representation of pain. The result of the classification is divided into three directions and clues: the writter sending the message to the reader or listener to give best experience for analyse. Finnaly, the researcher find many pain representation in song lyric by Linkin Park.
