Abstract

Literary works become a tool to channel expression or message. There are three types of literary works, namely poetry, prose and drama. Film is one of the literary works favored by many people in this era and belongs to the form of drama, film is very influential on people's mindset. There are two methods to analyze a film, namely extrinsic and intrinsic methods. the intrinsic method is a method that analyzes the content of the film itself, starting from the plot, characterization and mandate. Therefore, this study aims to identify and describe the characteristics and characterization of the main character in Elizabeth Rohm's film entitled "The Girl In The Basement". This study uses a descriptive qualitative method which aims to explain the data and is supported by several underlying theories. The theory used in this study is the character theory of Aminudin, Burhan and Kirzners which describes the definition of character, and the types of characters. The theory of characterization from Pickering D Hoeper which states that there are two methods, namely the direct method and the indirect method. The next theory used in this research is the characterization function theory from Piragy which states that there are three types of characterization functions, namely intrigue, convince and individualize. Finally, the theory used in this research is the theory of the moral message of Pradopo and Suseno. In the film The Girl In The Basement , there are 27 data which were analyzed with the result that Don and Sara are the main characters. Don has the characteristics of assertive, selfish, cruel, smart and responsible and Sarah has the characteristics of rebellious, smart, motherly, brave and independent. This film uses the indirect method of characterization, namely characterization through dialogue by the characters and characterization through action by the characters. The characterization function in this film is to intrigue, to convince and to individualize. The moral message conveyed in this film is that as a parent should advise your child in the right way and don't force it, also as a child must listen to the advice and orders of parents, don't argue with it.
