Abstract

When watching a movie, sometimes some people feel confused when they find an utterance or word that contains ambiguity. People must understand the meaning of the context and the purpose of what is being talked about. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct research on this topic with the research questions (1) What types of polysemy are found in the Frozen movie script? (2) How are the polysemy words interpreted in the Frozen movie script? The data were analyzed using the theory of type of polysemy proposed by Apresjan J.D (1974) and the theory of meaning proposed by John Lyons (1981). The method of this study is qualitative that produces descriptive data. Based on the analysis, it is found that are 26 data of polysemy that consist of two types of polysemy. There are 20 data of regular polysemy and six pairs data of irregular polysemy. So, in the Frozen movie script, regular polysemy is more dominant than irregular polysemy because regular polysemy has the same systematic word but is different semantically or non-synonymous. Meanwhile, irregular polysemy has the same or true meaning as other words, and even it has no systematic relation. From the data analysis, it can be concluded that polysemy can arise in spoken or written language. This is proven by the writer’s analysis, in which the ambiguous word findings that have more than one meaning are categorized into polysemy.
