Abstract

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Indonesian education is attempting to continue providing learning process and teaching activities as usual. In this situation, online learning is an essential for carrying out the teaching and learning activities. One that affects the running of a conducive class or not, it depends on the teacher’s strategy. The researcher try to explore how to creating classroom climate in online learning. In other words, this research identifies the teacher’s strategies for creating classroom climate in online learning aided by WhatsApp. In addition, this research also describes the students’ perception of the teacher’s strategies in creating classroom climate in online learning. This research used a qualitative method, specifically a case study method. The data were gathered through two instruments, those are an observation sheet and interview questions. The observation explores the teacher’s strategies for creating classroom climate in online learning aided by WhatsApp. The data from the observation about the teacher’s strategies for creating classroom climate in online learning aided by WhatsApp are strengthened and confirmed by the interview questions. Moreover, the interview questions also reveal the students’ perception of the teacher’s strategies in creating classroom climate in online learning. The findings revealed that, the teachers used a variety of strategies for creating classroom climate in online learning aided by WhatsApp, including: differentiated teaching, inquiry-based instruction, questioning strategies, neuroscience concept and ice breaking. The teachers also faced some difficulties in applying those strategies, including: teacher cannot implementing a two-way communication, dealing with bad network connection, and the teacher must learn some new application for online learning process. The teacher has several ways for dealing with those difficulties, including: teacher must improve their competence, using zoom or Google meeting for two-way communication, and choose supporting applications that do not require strong internet. The students’ perception toward teacher’s strategies for creating classroom climate are different, there are positive and negative perception, such as: students feel bored, students does not understand the material and the other is students are happy that they are do not go to school every day.
