Abstract

The focus of this research is to describe and analyze the pattern of heroism, or what is often called the hero's journey, and the development of the villain character in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's novel The Valley of Fear. In analyzing the characters of the hero is Sherlock Holmes, and the villain is Professor Moriarty, Thus, this research is formulated into three problems. First, the journey of the hero is shown in the novel. Second, the character of the villain is developed in the novel and third, the relationship between the hero and the villain is described in the novel. In analyzing these three problems, the writer uses Christopher Vogler's hero journey theory, which refers to Joseph Campbell's monomyth. This research was studied using qualitative research methods. The results of this study note that the hero goes through eleven of the twelve stages of the hero's journey goes through eleven of the twelve stages of the hero's journey. In addition, the writer also finds that the villain's development from start to finish is static, and finally, the writer finds that the relationship between hero and villain is one of rivalry.
