Abstract

In this research, the researcher discusses the fantasy genre formula in the movie "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)", and the significance of magical creatures in the movie. The primary theory in this study is formulaic theory from Saricks (2009) and Cawelti (1977). The research method that used in this study is descriptive qualitative method by Creswell (2017). The data is taken from the movie “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)” movie directed by David Yates. The result in this study concluded that total amount of 39 data was found. For the fantasy formula, there are total 30 data from 9 formula with 17 sub-category, as follows: Imaginary World (2), Imaginary Being (7) , The Journey / Quest (13), Treasure (1), Action Motives (1), A Clear Sense of Good and Evil (1), The Use of Magic or Supernatural Power (2), Tone / Mood (1), and Pacing (1). For the significance of magical creatures there are total 9 data from 2 types. Each types have one data as follows: The Significance of Magical Creature, Niffler, Murtlap, Erumpent, Bowtruckle, Swooping Evil, Demiguise, Occamy, and Thunderbird. The findings of this study suggest that fantasy movie typically follow a similar pattern. The researcher comes to the following conclusion regarding the fantasy elements included in the movie: As for the significance of magical creatures it’s adding the feeling of depth and complexity to the setting that beyond reality. Every magical creatures are gifted with their own special traits or skill.
