Abstract

Illocutionary acts are performed through the communicative power of an utterance. In other words, it refers to the communicative or functional purpose of an utterance or sentence. In illocutionary act theory, an utterance not only contains the literal meaning of the word used but also reflects the intention or purpose of the utterance that the speaker wants to achieve. John Searle, a philosopher, and linguist developed the illocutionary act theory. (Searle, 1976) identified various types of illocutionary acts, namely: assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. This research aims to find out the types and functions of illocutionary speech acts from Anies Baswedan's speech on the TEDx Talks YouTube channel. This research uses John Searle's theory. The object of this research is Anies Baswedan's speech. The data in this research is analyzed with qualitative research methods. Based on the research results of the type of illocutionary speech act, 44 utterances were found. There are 33 data of assertive type, 2 data are directive type, 5 data are commissive type, 3 data are expressive type, and 1 data are declarative type. The second objective is to describe the functions of illocutionary speech acts. The assertive consists of 13 data on stating function, 11 data on informing function, 2 data on the complaining function, and 7 data on reporting function. The directive is 2 data on asking function. The commissive is 5 data on promising functions. The expressive is 1 data on thanking function and 2 data on congratulating function. The declarative is 1 data on granting function. The researcher concludes that the type of illocutionary speech act that is most widely used in Anies Baswedan's speech is assertive. Meanwhile, the illocutionary act function that is most widely used is the assertive stating function. Many utterances show belief and contain statements in the form of information about the truth of the content of the utterance that binds the speaker.
