Abstract

Literary adaptation is a form of repetition without replication that involves both re-interpretation and re-creation. However,  this process is not merely plagiarism; it is a creative process of transforming the original material into something new. In this research, the researcher discusses the process of transformation in literary adaptation by comparing the original works and the results of literary adaptation, such as addition, modification, and reduction. There are three questions: 1) How is the plot transformation from the novel The Murder of Roger Ackroyd (1926) to film The Murder of Roger Ackroyd (2000)? and 2) What is the difference of the characterization in the novel The Murder of Roger Ackroyd (1926) compared to film The Murder of Roger Ackroyd (2000)? This research uses a qualitative method to analyse the data. The object of this research uses the descriptive method to describe the data from the movie. That contained the process of transformation based on Eneste's (1999) theory. The results of this research show that there are 7 addition data found in exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution. There were 2 reductions data, including in exposition and rising action. Four data of modifications occurred in the film, including in exposition and rising action. Based on the result of the characterization literary transformation process, the changes in the main character's point of view lead to different interpretations or raise expectations towards literary works. Several elements in the film adaptation appear to deviate from the source novel, with some changes in plot and characterizations, including point of view, that are deemed less relevant to the central storyline as presented in the source work.
