Abstract
This research aims to compare and analyze the similarities between two stories, namely the fairy tale The Frog Prince (Germany) and the folktale Joko Kendil (Indonesia). This research discusses the similarities in theme and motive between the two stories. Therefore, this research uses a comparative literature study based on Sussan Bassnett’s theory. In analyzing theme and motive, the writer uses John G. Cawelti’s theory for theme and Charles Sanders Peirce’s theory for motive. This research uses objective research because the writer focuses on analyzing theme and motive by using structural analysis. The results show that The Frog Prince and Joko Kendil have similar themes and motive, namely the themes of sincerity amd romance, as well as similar motive in the form of symbols. In the theme of sincerity, the two stories both present sincerity by the main female character. While in the theme of romance, both stories present a love story between the main character. In motive, both stories symbolize the main character with something such as object, plant, and animal. Thus, The Frog Prince and Joko Kendil, both stories that come from different cultures and regions, have similarities.
