Abstract

Self assessment is the technique to improve students ability by themselves. Using slef assessment, students can know their lack and what they should be. The aim of this study are to know (a) the implementation of self-assessment in students reading comprehension skills and to know (b) does self assessment implicity affect to reading comprehension students skill. The method applied in this research was a qualitative case study using observation and questionnaire. The research took one class and 15 students comprised into low categories, medium categories and high categories. These techniques were used to answer first research questions and second research question. To gain information from of sample, the observation has done at the final exam of this course. And a questionnaire is adapted from Simtiyah (2019). It is used to answer the first question of this. The questionnaire consists of 10 items related to reading comprehension skills. The data are obtained from observation and questionnaire. As a counted 60% of participants keep writing their understanding of the text that they read. Through the observation and questionnaire, this study found that self-assessment affected the reading comprehension skills of 8-grade students. The result of the study on reading comprehension has several problems related to the factors that cause the lack of students in their reading comprehension skills and their self-confidence in learning English. More than 90% of the respondents felt self-confidence after using self-assessment. In addition, some students also have a deficiency in reading texts. It is because some of them are still lacking in understanding and interpreting every word they find when reading the text. Some of them also forget the meaning of the words found in the text. A part of them also have good reading skills, but they have no confidence, they are afraid to decide whether the meaning of the word is right or not, and they choose to cheat on their friends' work. This research came to the conclusion that self-assessment keeps students active in learning situations: students’ self-confidence and motivation rise. Self- assessment can teach the students how to evaluate themselves in learning. In this research, the researcher only got to do observation and questionnaire. Thus, it would be better in the next research to take more instruments such as interviews to make the explanation more explicit.
