Abstract

This study concentrates on the translation strategies utilized by EFL students to translate a narrative text from Matt de la Pena's (2015) English children's picture book "Last Stop on Market Street". The quality of the translation is evaluated using an accuracy score scale developed by Nababan, Nuraeni, and Sumardiono (2012). This study utilizes a qualitative descriptive research design, collecting data from fifth-semester EFL students in a translation class at the State Islamic University of Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung through a translation test. This present study discovers that participants apply six of the seven translation strategies proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet (2000): calque, literal translation, transposition, modulation, adaptation, and equivalence. Literal translation and modulation are the most commonly used strategies. In conclusion, this study examines how EFL students translate source texts from a children's picture book. The translation products are evaluated for accuracy. This study finds that students use six out of seven suggested translation strategies by Vinay and Darbelnet. In the examination of the accuracy of translation products by EFL students, it is observed that several participants demonstrate the ability to produce precise translations. However, it is also noticed that these students need to pay attention to several translations that do not receive accurate results. The translation strategies that students use to deal with this problem are adjusted to their needs.
