Abstract

Charles Sanders Peirce uses three different types of signs in semiotics to represent signs that are based on objects: icon, index, and symbol (in Irvine, 2019). In "Good Night Mr. Bean" there is a comedy that semiotic analysis can shed light on the humor and satire employed in the episode. Therefore, the research can reveal how symbols and signs are manipulated to create comedic effects and commentary on societal norms. The objectives of the research are: 1. To find the icon, index, and symbol that are feature in the Mr. Bean Series: Episode “Good Night Mr. Bean”. 2. To analyses the representation of Mr. Bean Series: Episode “Good Night Mr. Bean” viewed by the icon, index, and symbol. The research applied the descriptive-qualitative method to describe the data with the main theory used for analyzing data by Pierce (1991). The research found that the signs of icon, index, and symbol occurred in the Mr. Bean Series. There are twenty data of each icon, index, and symbol. Meanwhile, from the twenty data is filled with Mr. Bean's trademark slapstick humor and absurd situations. Furthermore, it concluded that all of data found of this episode represents humor because it takes ordinary situations and infuses them with Mr. Bean's unique personality and comedic timing, resulting in amusing and entertaining moments for the viewers.
