Abstract

This research focuses on finding genre patterns in the film Marlowe (2022) which uses the detective genre and finding character elements in the detective genre as well as finding action patterns from the hard-boiled detective formula used in this film using the Hard-boiled detective theory formula from John G. Cawelti. The elements in the detective genre include; The Detective, The Criminal, The Victim, and Those Involved In Crime. Meanwhile, the action patterns contained in the Hard-boiled detective formula include; Detective as a hero, suspense and threat, modern city setting, the role of women and changes in meaning. The purpose of this research is to find out what genre is used in this film and find out what elements are used in the detective genre, as well as knowing the action patterns of the Hard-boiled detective formula represented in the Marlowe film. Apart from that, this research uses a qualitative descriptive study research method. This research uses a method that relies on text and image data, has structural steps in analyzing data and describing it. This method is used to analyze data from a visual and narrative point of view because these two elements can be represented through both. The result of this research is a representation of the hard-boiled detective formula in the film Marlowe. Action patterns are presented in the form of a narrative structure, especially plot, character and dialogue. These elements can influence the development of the main character, for example a modern city setting which depicts corruption, and death, a representation of a moral wasteland dominated by crime. The author also found that several elements are related to each other which influence the development of the main character.
