Abstract
This thesis is based on a statement in an article that states that the western genre has experienced a decline in the number of fans from time to time. Therefore, to maintain the western genre, some filmmakers make various new things to maintain this genre. Grisse is one of the western film series identified as having novelty or invention in it. This thesis examines the western formula found in the film series titled Grisse. There are two purposes in this thesis. First, to find out the elements of western genre conventions that are applied in the Grisse film series. Second, finding the invention or novelty contained in the film series Grisse. As for the method used by researchers, it is through an objective approach. The objective approach is to analyze a work objectively through the elements in it. Meanwhile, the data source obtained is in the form of subtitles and screen captures from this film series. In analyzing the data, researchers used Cawelti's formula theory (1980) and strengthened by several other related theories. The results show that the Grisse film series has complied with the standards or conventions of the Western genre. Besides complying with conventions, the film series also displays some novelty or invention obtained by taking local elements where the film series is produced, which is Indonesia. These new elements are an invention for the Western genre, but for the Western genre produced in Asia, this is the forerunner of later convention elements that will be called the Eastern Western genre. In other words, the inventions of the Western genre are the conventions for the Eastern Western genre.
