Abstract

This research analyzed gesture which represents human fear in Fede Alvarez and Rodo Sayagues movie script. The research uses semiotic as the main theory. The researcher focuses this research on the semiotics elements using Barthes theory and his connotation and denotation. The research also uses gesture theory of Kendon continuum by McNeill. This research aims to describe semiotic and gesture analysis on a movie script. The problems are which gesture represent human fear. The researcher uses the qualitative method to analyze the data. The data is taken from Don’t Breathe movie script (https: //scribd.com). The data consist of 20 gestures. The researcher collected data by highlighting and screenshooting the gesture from the movie script. After collecting data, the researcher analyzes the data about what gesture which represent human fear and the process of how gesture can represent human fear in fiction using Barthes theory and then made a conclusion of the research. The result of the research shows that gesture can convey a message through the body to other with or without accompanying words to represent the fear. The answer to the problem, researcher categorized the data into gesticulation, speech-framed, pantomime, and sign gesture. In this movie researcher find out from types of Kendon Continuum from McNeill theory, the pantomime gesture is a gesture which often used by the main actor more than other types. The researcher points out and describe the gestures as a sign of human fear. Rocky as the main character from the movie did a spontaneous and powerful action such as kick and scream to express her fear. The researcher found the fear gestures of Rocky can represent fear same as in real life. The conclusion is through gesture with and without words the message can be understood.
