Abstract

This study analyzes the use of figurative language as a medium of self-expression in NIKI's album Nicole (2022). The research focuses on identifying and interpreting various types of figurative language, including metaphors, similes, personification, and symbolism, to understand how these elements contribute to the artist's expression of personal experiences and emotions. Using a qualitative approach, the study employs close textual analysis of selected songs from the album. Each song is meticulously examined to uncover the deeper meanings embedded in the figurative language, which reflects NIKI's journey of self-discovery and emotional resilience. The research provides upon theories of figurative language and self-expression to provide a comprehensive analysis of how NIKI utilizes these literary devices to convey complex themes such as identity, love, loss, and empowerment. The findings reveal that NIKI's use of figurative language is not only a stylistic choice but also a deliberate strategy to engage the listener on a deeper emotional level. The metaphors and similes, for example, are used to create vivid imagery that resonates with the audience's own experiences, while the symbolism often represents broader societal issues or personal struggles. Through this analysis, the study concludes that NIKI's album Nicole serves as a powerful testament to the role of figurative language in modern music as a vehicle for self-expression and artistic storytelling.
