Abstract

This thesis discusses the social class during the Victorian era in Oscar Wilde's novel The Picture of Dorian Gray and its relationship with social conditions in Victorian society. This study tries to explain the forms of social class and how social class affects social conditions in the life of Victorian society. The Picture of Dorian Gray was chosen as the object of research because it provides many descriptions of the life of Victorian society and because this novel is a literary work created during the Victorian era, making it very close to the reality of life at that time. Therefore, this research uses the method of literary criticism with a mimetic approach to analyze the representation of social reality in a literary work. To analyze the object, this research uses Marxist theory on social class and its forms based on Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, and also employs Marxist literary criticism theory based on Terry Eagleton. The results show that there are three forms of social class in Victorian society: the upper class, often known as the Aristocracy; the middle class, which consists of people with expertise in a particular field; and the lower class, made up of the working class. Thus, there are also influences from social class that affect social life in Victorian society, such as the creation of inequality due to the privileges possessed by the upper class, which also allows the upper class to influence society. This also affects other aspects of life such as lifestyle, appearance, values, and morals in Victorian society.
