Abstract
This research focuses on analyzing the drama elements and drama formula in Rachel Shenton’s The Silent Child (2017) short movie. The objectives of this research are to: find out the elements of drama genre depicted in The Silent Child (2017) short movie and analyze how the formula of drama built in The Silent Child (2017) short movie. The researcher used Lajos Egri’ elements of drama writing theory and formula theory from John G. Cawelti and Gustav Freytag with descriptive qualitative method. The results of the analysis showed that there are three elements of drama genre in The Silent Child (2017) short movie: 1) Premise, 2) Characters: the bone structure, environment, character growth, strength of will in a character, plot or character, pivotal character, orchestration, unity of opposites, 3) Conflict: origin of action, cause and effect, rising, movement, foreshadowing conflict, point of attack, transition, crisis-climaxresolution. The formula of drama in The Silent Child (2017) short movie is built through a structured progression from the exposition to the resolution. Starts from the exposition, where Libby’s isolation due to her deafness is introduced, through rising tension as Joanne teaches her sign language, clashing with Sue’s desire for her to be “normal”. The climax occurs when Sue decides to stop the sign language lessons, leading to the falling action where Libby struggles in a mainstream school without support. In the resolution, Libby’s isolation is fully realized, emphasizing the emotional consequences of the family's choices.
