Abstract

This research aims to find black literary traditions in the drama Pipeline by Dominique Morisseau. By combining two fundamental theories, double consciousness W.E.B. Du Bois as a theory of black literary identity, and the signifyin(g) monkey Henry Louis Gates Jr. as a theory of black literary structure, this research aims to analyze black literary traditions and black literary structures to oppose white literature in the drama Pipeline. Methodologically, this research uses a qualitative approach complemented by literary criticism techniques to investigate and interpret the data thoroughly. The main findings reveal that the drama Pipeline contains a double consciousness in each character depicted through character descriptions, dialogues, and monologues. Apart from that, the analysis shows the use of black vernacular in almost all of its drama texts and the use of double voiced due to the emergence of double consciousness as a black literary identity. Dominique Morisseau uses this black vernacular and double voiced in her drama as a form of resistance to the school-to-prison pipeline education system, and a form of black literary resistance to white literature and the grand narratives created by white people. This research provides valuable insights into double consciousness, black vernacular, and double voice as black literary traditions and structures, offering greater insight into black literature.
