Abstract

This study investigates the pronunciation errors of English consonants made by students at a Junior High School in Rendeh, Bandung Barat, Indonesia, and explores the factors influencing these errors. As English becomes increasingly important for global communication, developing accurate pronunciation skills is essential for students in Indonesia. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews with students and teachers. The research identifies common pronunciation errors in consonants such as /v/, /θ/, /ð/, /ʒ/, /ʃ/, /tʃ/, and /dʒ/, highlighting the challenges posed by phonetic transfer from the students’ native languages, Sundanese and Indonesian. The findings indicate that limited early exposure to English phonetics and a lack of real-world practice significantly exacerbate pronunciation issues. Students often feel unprepared to engage in spoken English outside the classroom, which hinders their confidence and communication skills. In conclusion, the study recommends several strategies for educators, including integrating technology, creating real-world conversation opportunities, and establishing a supportive learning environment. By addressing these challenges and implementing these strategies, teachers can help students improve their pronunciation and overall English language proficiency, ultimately preparing them for effective communication in a global context.
