Abstract
Wawacan Panganten Tujuh is one of the Sundanese manuscripts that contains cultural and religious values in the Islamic wedding tradition in Sumedang in the 19th century. This manuscript describes the marriage process of Islamic figures, such as the Prophet Adam and Siti Hawa, the Prophet Muhammad and Siti Khadijah, and Ali bin Abi Thalib and Fatimah. In it, there are local traditions such as siraman, huap lingkung, dowry, and sawer, which show the blend of Islamic culture and Sundanese customs. This study seeks to understand how the manuscript reflects the social norms of the Sumedang community during that period. This study focuses on two main aspects, namely (1) how the historical background and content of Wawacan Panganten Tujuh are, and (2) how the historical context and influence of Islam in the wedding culture in Sumedang in the 19th century are based on the manuscript. The purpose of this study is to analyze the social and cultural values in Wawacan Panganten Tujuh, and to identify how Islam assimilates with Sundanese customs in traditional wedding practices. This study uses the Historical Method with four stages of research. First, heuristics, namely collecting sources related to the topic or theme to be studied. These sources are then classified into primary sources and secondary sources. Second, criticism or testing of sources that have been collected both from internal and external sides. Third, interpretation, namely interpreting historical facts that have been collected so that they become a coherent whole. Finally, historiography, namely the stage of writing the results of historical facts that have been interpreted. The results of the study show that Wawacan Panganten Tujuh functions as a tool for Islamic preaching in the Sundanese community, especially in forming social norms of marriage. Traditions such as siraman and sawer are interpreted as forms of self-purification and sharing blessings in Islamic teachings. In addition, historical analysis shows that the influence of the Mataram Sultanate in the Islamization of Sumedang also shaped the marriage practices in this manuscript. This finding strengthens the view that Wawacan Panganten Tujuh is evidence of the acculturation of Islam and Sundanese culture in forming social norms that have survived to this day.
