Abstract
This research discusses the causes of tragedy, which are the elements of tragedy itself in the novel Tenggelamnya Kapal Van der Wijck by Hamka and the poem The Rime of The Ancient Mariner by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Tragedy does not just happen, but there are triggers that cause the tragedy to occur. This research uses Aristotles' theory of the elements of tragedy. Aristotles argues that there are six elements of tragedy, namely plot, character, diction, thought, music, and spectacle. This research also uses a qualitative method with a comparative approach. The comparative approach is needed because later the data obtained from the novel Tenggelamnya Kapal Van der Wijck and the poem The Rime of The Ancient Mariner will be compared and seen how the differences and similarities that exist in the two literary works. The results show that both literary works are proven to follow the principles of tragedy proposed by Aristotles.
