Abstract
This research aims to find the cultural transformation that affects the closeness of adaptation results. The objects for this study are taken from fifth-semester students of English literature department at UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung on their final assignment for Further Studies in Drama class in 2024. The data are the original inspiration drama script Bull by Mark Bartlett and its adaptations drama scripts entitled PDI: Pegawai Di Intimidasi and Bonkers. The researcher utilized a qualitative approach and comparative method to Bullying and Manipulative Behavior Characterization through adaptation technique in a drama scripts. To analyze the element of Bullying, the researcher used Matthiesen and Einersen’s Bullying in Workplace. To analyze the element of Manipulative Behavior, the researcher employed Dr. Simon. G.K’s In Sheep’s Clothing : Understanding and Dealing with Manipulative People. To analyze the adaptation technique, On translation by John Sallis is employed by the researcher. The result found that Mark Bartletts’s Bull is heavily influenced by the culture of straightforwardness of western culture to represent the element of bullying and manipulative behavior. Then, PDI was found to utilize Jaksel language style to deliver the bullying and manipulative behavior elements. Besides, Bonkers was found to use formal type of Bahasa Indonesia combined with demonic setting within its effort to represent bullying and manipulative behavior. Then, parameter of closeness is based on the amount of cultural transformation and its easiness to understand for Indonesian readers. Based on findings and conclusion, PDI was found to be close to the target audience while Bonkers is far from the target audience.
