Abstract

This thesis examines the characterizations in Bill Willingham's Fables comic series, comparing them with various classical folktale characters. Using a comparative literature approach, the study analyzes the methods and types of characterization employed in both Fables and traditional folktales. The analysis uncovers significant similarities in how characters are portrayed and depicted, revealing a nuanced interplay between modern reinterpretations and their classical roots. By incorporating theories of characterization and drawing on key elements from folktale studies, the thesis offers insights into the continuity and evolution of character archetypes. Ultimately, this research highlights Fables as a contemporary reimagining of folktales that bridges traditional narrative forms with modern storytelling techniques.
