Abstract

This research was prompted by the inadequate reading comprehension abilities in English among junior high school students. The investigation aims to determine the impact of the Cooperative Integrated Reading and Composition (CIRC) instructional model on students' reading comprehension proficiency. The study employed a quantitative methodology with a quasi-experimental design utilising a pretest-posttest control group configuration. The Participants comprised 60 eighth-grade students from SMPN 2 Rengasdengklok, equally distributed with 30 students in the experimental group and 30 in the control group. Data were collected through pretest and posttest instruments consisting of multiple-choice reading comprehension assessments previously validated through expert judgment. Data analysis technique used descriptive statistics and independent sample t-test procedures. The study provides recommendations for students to engage actively in collaborative learning, for teachers to adopt CIRC as an alternative teaching method, and for future researchers to explore further developments of the CIRC model. Hypothesis testing yielded a significance value (2-tailed) of 0.001 < 0.05, indicating rejection of H₀ and acceptance of H₁. Consequently, the findings demonstrate that the CIRC instructional model substantially influences enhancing students' reading comprehension abilities.
