Abstract
In pragmatics, presupposition refers to background information assumed to be known or accepted by the listener, enabling smooth communication. This study examines the types and functions of presupposition in Lando Norris’ vlogs on his official YouTube channel. The research focuses on two main questions: (1) What types of presupposition appear in Lando Norris’ vlogs? and (2) What functions do they serve? The study uses Yule’s (1996) six presupposition types and Ge’s (2011) eight presupposition functions within a qualitative case study approach. Data were collected from vlog transcripts and analyzed based on presupposition triggers and context. A total of 523 presuppositional utterances were identified, with existential presupposition being the most frequent (451 occurrences), showing frequent reference to assumed entities or facts. Other types include lexical (28), factive (20), non-factive (14), structural (8), and counterfactual (2). Of the 279 utterances analyzed for function, enlargement was the most common (92), followed by interestingness (65), emphasis (41), and conciseness (33). Less frequent functions include persuasion (18), concealment (12), self-protection (11), and euphemism (7). These findings suggest that Lando Norris uses presupposition not only to convey background information efficiently, but also to engage viewers and shape a relatable public image through subtle language strategies.
